The Thorn
Protection · Boundaries · Strength · Wisdom
Message
Not all things are meant to be easy. The thorn protects what is precious. Challenges can sharpen, strengthen and guide. Even resistance has a purpose.
Ecology
Thorns, spines and prickles discourage browsing. They are modified stems, leaves or hairs — expensive tissue that only pays if the plant is worth defending. Many thorned plants are still generous with fruit.
Reflection
Where is a sharp edge protecting something living?
Action
Keep one boundary clear. Soften one that is only habit.
Shadow
Thorns left in long after the browsing stopped.
Symbols
spine · browsed tip · guarded fruit
Scientific context
Spines are modified leaves; thorns are modified stems; prickles arise from epidermis. All reduce herbivory, especially on young, nutritious shoots.
Affirmation
I can be kind and still be edged.
